The Tango Clinic
Private Lessons
The Tango Clinic is developed from my own experience of private lessons from various maestros of Argentine Tango. The Tango Clinic is designed to give the student the maximum personal feedback which may not be possible in a group class setting. I believe each session must have an objective that needs to be met, and the teacher and the student must work together to set a clear goal, and record and monitor the progress.
The Tango Clinic sessions are composed of:
Consultation (about 15 min): Sometimes it is perfectly ok to mix business with pleasure. Besides, tango is a social dance! The person you are learning Tango from should be sociable, right? I believe this consultation is an important time where you and the instructor will get to know each other. The understanding of your learning style, dance background and experience along with your own struggle, your successes, your short term and long term goal in Tango is crucial in developing a personalized approach in a private lesson. Think of it as a therapy session, if you will. :)
Evaluation (about 10 min): An immediate feedback is a key element in learning anything in life. Therefore, the instructor or the assistant will dance with you a full tanda as if you would in a milonga, while he/she personally assesses your strength and weakness in the fundamentals; your embrace, posture, walk, musicality, and how you actively communicate movement.
Diagnosis (about 10 min): The instructor will give you a verbal assessment of his/her finding, helping you to become aware of your strengths and weaknesses. He/she will then assist you in setting goals and assist in developing a personalized approach that will make you a better dancer.
Remedy:
1. Technique Exercise (15 min) – The instructor will coach, guide and assist you in developing solo technique exercises that will transform your dance.
2. Figures (10 min) – The instructor will demonstrate and teach few classic figures for you to practice where these techniques are used.
3. Elements (10 min) – The instructor will identify additional elements, break them down, and show you how to use them to develop your own improvisation in tango.
4. Practice (10 min) – The instructor or the assistant will dance with you another tanda as you incorporate the technique, figures and elements you have learned.
Reevaluation (5 min) – The instructor will give you his/her assessment of the before and after along with recommendations, advises, and encouragements.
